Have you ever been told by a coach to look for a pitch to hit that is good and if it is good- swing?
Maybe you take this approach yourself without anyone guiding you to? You say, “If I like this pitch, I’m swinging.”
That is what a good hitter does of course.
However, it is not what a great hitter does. A great hitter says, “If this pitch is bad- I’m taking.”
Don’t let yourself go on the defense. You must stay in attack mode. When you say to yourself to swing “if” it is good, it is less instinctive. Imagine the ball coming out of the pitcher’s hand and trying to recognize if it is really good, then deciding to swing. That is difficult.
Instead, stay aggressive. Trust yourself to take the pitch for a ball if it is not what you want. That type of focus will lead to hitting the ball harder more often.
